As the last age dinosaurs drew to a close, there could be found scattered throughout the ancient landscape a myriad of turtle species of every concievable shape and size. Among them were side-necked turtles - so named for their less common neck retraction mechanism. These creatures have few living relatives today, but are well represented in the fossil record. The oddest of these strange skulls were the subject for a series of reconstructions, seen above, for a recent scientific paper on these unusual reptiles.
